Yusaku Godai is a student living in a rundown apartment building called Maison Ikkoku.  His neighbors there are loud, rude, obnoxious, and like to hold drinking parties in his room while he is trying to study.  Eventually he decides to move out, but is interrupted by the arrival of the cute new apartment manager, Kyoko Otonashi.  Godai is instantly smitten, and decides to stay at Ikkoku so he can get close to her.  Unfortunately, Kyoko is recently widowed and not at all ready for another relationship.  It also doesn't help that Godai is kind of a loser who flunks his college classes and can't keep a job.

Mostly like a sitcom with misunderstandings, antics from the annoying neighbors, and Godai pathetically trying to get Kyoko's attention.  Gradually there is some genuine character growth, and more emphasis on the romance plot.
