Sum it up in a Sentence

A young boy is caught up in an interplanetary war between Earth and it's breakway colonies, Zeon. The father of all Real Robot shows.

Main Description

Universal Century 0079: The Principality of Zeon has declared its split from the Earth Federation, and subsequently launched a massive war of independence, a war which has raged in every continent on earth and in nearly every space colony and lunar settlement. The Zeon have the upper hand through their use of a revolutionary new type of weapon, their humanoid mobile suits. When a Zeon recon team disobey mission orders and begin attacking Side 7 its citizens stumble across the Federation's latest weapon: the Gundam. With the aid of Earth Federation soldiers stationed aboard the MS carrier White Base the newly formed crew of refugees set out to change the course of the One Year War — or die trying.

Personal Opinions

It just does. Absolute classic. I recommend watching the three movies instead of the TV series (unless you really like Gundam) due to pacing issues.

Gundam is all things that would come to encompass the real robot genre. There's a lot of decent realism that many shows still don't follow, like guns actually running out of ammo. There's also a lot not to like, mostly revolving around cheap 70s animation. The series veers a bit off into the weird for my tastes, as I feel that the newtype/psychic element weakens an otherwise smi-realistic military robot series. As a whole though, this show maintains a well-deserved spot as a king of robot anime. Do see the three-part movie, as the show drags too much to be worth the effort.

I watched the TV series before watching the movies. I don't feel as though that was a huge mistake, but the movies are definitely easier to get into. The show was interesting and Amuro is a good protagonist even though he still acts stupid or selfish at times. I feel as though the Zeon are portrayed as too evil in the show despite the Federation not being great.
