Sum it up in a Sentence:

An anime about making anime.

Main Description

Five high-school girls from their school's Animation Club vow to enter the world of anime production and one day make the show of their dreams together. Fast-forward two and a half years, and they all must contend with the stress, limited career opportunities, and tight deadlines of the anime industry, while contending with the outsize (yet often strangely believable) personalities that make up their studio Musashino Animation. Stunt driving may also be involved.

Note that the two OVA bonus episodes are episodes of the two series that the fictitious Musashino Animation is making over the course of the show.

Personal Opinions

StandardVC10

A show with a lot of insider jokes, but very funny and clearly put together with both dedication and direct inspiration from real events. It's a large cast of characters, but their problems carry surprising emotional weight. Definitely worth checking out.

This show is utterly fantastic. It does a great job of conveying how hard making anime is, the struggles between the different production teams, and the pressure on the production as a whole, while somehow maintaining a sense of optimism about the whole ordeal.

While the show follows the studio, and the main 5, when I came away from the show, I saw it as being about the trials and tribulations of young professionals entering the work force. I've seen others that felt that the main point of the show was about the struggles inherent in any creative industry. I think that really speaks to the strength of the show: that for how shallow it could be, there's enough there to draw your own meaning.
