While I do believe the ADTRW consensus on this show was favorable, I found Shana to be pretty dull. I know it's real popular, it's got a movie and a even a second season starting in about a month, but I see it as just another trite children's fantasy tale with annoying characters. The male lead is about as useful and emotionally secure as Piro from Megatokyo. I kept waiting for him to grow a pair but he never did. I also don't like the elementary school romance or anyone involved in said romance. And yet I'm pretty sure I'll still be watching the movie and the next season. It takes a load of crap before I'll drop a series. Maybe Shakugan no Shana doesn't entirely suck.

Drags on a fair bit, but it's not bad. Just be sure you like your fantasy series.
Shockingly, the male lead does grow a pair in the second season.
