Personally, I'd rank this as one of my top 3 anime series of all times. While the first episode has you believe that this is just a normal, unusual and innocent anime about two kids, it soon turns out that it's quite the opposite. The various Abenobashis Arumi and Sasshi visit are absolutely batshit insane most of the time. Not only does the anime not take itself too seriously, it also makes sure to poke a lot of fun at various other animes or general cliches found in animes. For example an episode which takes a total piss on everything DragonballZ, one where they poke fun at all the sci-fi mecha things and much, much more. Definitely too much to list here.
Despite the fact that this anime is funny as all hell there is still a very serious tone to everything that only starts shining through in the latter episodes. At its heart, it's an anime about a boy afraid of changes. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but the latter episodes really are much more serious than the first bunch and the story starts to revolve more around WHY they travel through all these weird worlds and how they ended up there in the first place. A very surprising plot-twist (if you want to call it that) sweetens the whole deal. I can seriously not recommend this enough to anyone who enjoys a good laugh, or rather a lot of them, but still wants to have a story that makes sense and comes to a very satisfying closure.
