Main Description
Jan Akiyama is 16 years old and basically bug-fuck crazy. His grandfather, Kaiichiro, is essentially Iron Chef Chinese, and has a long-standing rivalry with a dude called Mutsuju Gobancho. Jan decides he's going to head into the big city and settle the rivalry once for all. Once he arrives in the city, Jan meets Mutsuju's grandchild, a budding cook named Kiriko, and the two butt heads over their drastically different cooking methods. Kirikio attempts to teach Jan about heart and love for the food, while Jan lives only to crush his culinary enemies. They end up involved in a number of cook-offs where they meet a cast of equally eccentric characters and cooking challenges.
If You Liked This, You Might Like...
- Yakitate Japan is basically Iron Wok Jan with more jokes.
- One Outs- Jan treats cooking much like One Outs treats baseball. Also both main characters are crazy bastards.
- Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann- or pretty much any "hot-blooded hero" show matches Jan's attitude well.
Personal Opinions
OldTimeyProspector
Iron Wok Jan is a manga for anyone who's wasted a day watching Iron Chef. It's full of absurd chefs cooking absurd dishes under nonsensical restrictions and the cocky young asshole who makes it through with sheer, dogged, crazyfaced determination. The art's nice and detailed, which helps to sell the complex dishes and techniques, and while I find the non-cooking chapters fall a bit flat, overall I'd call this a solidly enjoyable read.
