Probably the best thing Rumiko Takahashi ever wrote.  A big factor for this is that this story, unlike most of her other work except her short stories, is actually plotted with a clear beginning, middle, and end of the story.  Also, although there are plenty of instances of Takahashi's signature humor, the focus is on the love story between Godai and Kyoko, which is believable and quite sweet.  In short, if you read anything by Takahashi, I recommend this.

Sum it up in a Sentence:

A struggling college student endures life in an apartment building full of weirdos because he is infatuated with the building's manager.

Main Description

Yusaku Godai is a student living in a rundown apartment building called Maison Ikkoku, where the neighbors are loud, rude, obnoxious, and like to hold drinking parties in his room while he is trying to study. Eventually he tries to move out, but is interrupted by the arrival of the cute new apartment manager, Kyoko Otonashi. Godai is instantly smitten, and decides to stay at Ikkoku so he can get close to her. Unfortunately, Kyoko is recently widowed and not at all ready for another relationship. It also doesn't help that Godai is kind of a loser who flunks his college classes and can't keep a job.

Mostly like a sitcom with misunderstandings, antics from the annoying neighbors, and Godai pathetically trying to get Kyoko's attention. Gradually there is some genuine character growth, and more emphasis on the romance plot.
