This is a good film with interesting art direction, discourse and character design. Cat soup ascribes unusual roles to everyday objects, instead of the very typical, fantastical catgirl-harem-mecha anime with their respective tropes and moechars and whatnot.

As far as Cat Soup’s integrity as a well put-together and meaningful piece of animation goes, it isn’t very good.  There’s little reason for anything in this and unless you’re stoned, you probably won’t get much from viewing this alone.  However, sneak this on while you’ve got a few buddies over who can dig the entire Adult Swim style of humor and it’s a pretty decent riot.  There’s enough creatively bizarre moments sandwiched into this thing that it can be fun watching with your pals while questioning what the hell the creators of this thing were smoking while making it.

I recommend watching this if you're looking for something that's really out there.  Especially since it's so short, so you barely have to invest any time.  That being said, it's not the best thing I've seen.  It's definitely open to interpretation and has that allegorical feel to it, but I'm not sure exactly just how deep it is.  It's hard to explain. It almost feels like watching ''2001 A Space Odyssey'' the movie before reading the novel.  The difference being that even without the novel, I felt there was a lot in ''2001'' that was discussion worthy, whereas with ''Cat Soup'', the best thing I could come up with was "Those fish totally just ate that cat's poop!"

A surreal story about a cat that takes his sister on a strange journey in an attempt to restore her memories... or something like that... maybe.

Main Description

Cat Soup is an extremely quirky show. It follows the tale of two cats. Their travels take them from a circus, to a boat with a pig, to a desert, and other strange locations. It relies very little on dialogue. When someone talks, they make weird, unintelligible chirping noises similar to how characters in Banjo-Kazooie speak. Most of the time, we're not even told what is actually being said, but occasionally a little speech bubble will pop up to clue us in. And even then, the bubble contains either a picture or no more than a few words. Instead, the most important part of the show is the visuals, which are best described as surreal and postmodern. Because of the nature of the show and its short runtime, going into too much detail would end up tarnishing the experience of watching it.

The clever animation is cool to watch but aside from that there's nothing particularly worthwhile in this. Definitely fun while it lasts though.
