I decided to pick this up after watching and liking the new season which is currently airing. The first series is even better. Hajime is a lovable character and Takamura is hilarious. I decided to pick this up after watching and liking the new season which is currently airing. The first series is even better. I marathoned through all 76 episodes, watching 3-6 eps a day until I was done. It has a great mix of training, action, and comedy portions with a bit of romance. Hajime is a lovable character and Takamura is hilarious. Now it's time to watch the Champion Road special and the Kimura vs. Mashiba OVA.
Dj Meow Mix
I have not read the manga, so I cannot speak of it's quality, but it's long running, so some people out there must love it. The anime however is great. Ippo, Takamura, Miura and the others are all great enjoyable characters. The fights in particular are brutal, and the direction really lends itself to the impact of each blow, especially when Ippo scores a hit. I don't think I'll ever forget the riff that plays when he lands the Dempsey Roll.
BetterDead
This is a solid watch. Especially so for sports series fans, and even still for those uninterested in the genre. The fights are well done, but highly stylised - as are the boxer's physiques, which are completely impossible for the weight classes they are apparently meant to be fighting in. Good music, and the animation in the later continuations of the series is fluid. The character of Takamura is also probably one of the most fun in any series. The biggest downside to the series is the blankspace that exists when there is not a major fight coming up - there is only so riveting boxing training can ever be. And, to not put too fine a point on it, I find a lot of the humour pretty unfunny, as well as all the awkward romance stuff really adds nothing to the overall whole.
