Main Description

Naota is a normal Japanese 6th grade boy (although a little cynical). His older brother moves to America to play baseball, and leaves behind his homeless, 17-year-old girlfriend Mamimi. She starts sending mixed signals and making advances at Naota, and he doesn't know what to do about her. But to make matters worse, Naota's world is totally turned upside down when he is run over by a woman on a Vespa. During their first encounter, she hits him over the head with her guitar, which then causes a horn to grow out of his forehead. She calls herself "Haruko", and her presence brings changes to Naota's life that lead to even further insanity.

Totalizator

This is the best anime ever created. Second best. THIS is the actual best show ever created.

Dan a man

If you're looking for a funny and crazy show, this is worth watching. It's intentionally esoteric, and is the kind of show that you'll want to watch twice in order to (better attempt to) pick up on everything. And despite all the plot details being difficult to figure out, the show does it in a fun way. So unlike some of the more serious mind-fuck shows you'll find, at the end of the day, you don't feel as though your brain has been unfairly molested.

Dire Penguin

It's also important to note that all the music for FLCL was done by by the amazing Japanese rock group, the pillows. The soundtrack for the show is excellent and goes a long way towards making the atmosphere work.

Completely and utterly insane. And yet, I like it more and more every time I re-watch it. That can't be a good thing, can it? And where did I put my eyebrows?

Falls Down Stairs

People might tell you how “random” this show is, as if it were MONKEY CHEESE LOL style humour. It’s not that difficult to see how they came to that conclusion: it's fast paced, really funny, and (at first viewing) it will seem like a lot of plot events just come out of nowhere. If you pay close attention, though, there’s a definite logic underlying the whole thing, and it’s a lot more psychological than it could be if it simply trying to be “random”. It might just be the the strangest coming-of-age story ever told (as well as one of the most Freudian animes ever made). Also, the soundtrack is awesome. Highly recommended to watch.

The show can be better appreciated by reading the manga after watching it. The manga is a very different animal than the show; it lacks a lot of the energy and humour (it can still sometimes be pretty funny though), and is significantly darker. It also has some very unusual, scribbly art that may put a lot of people off. At first glance, it may just seem like a bad adaptation; if you give it a chance, though, you’ll find that it has a different agenda (and plot) than the show, but nevertheless manages to preserve much of the same spirit, drawing attention towards some of the more psychological aspects of the story that were definitely present but less prominent in the anime.

TannhauserGate

I own two anime soundtracks, and this is the other one. The Pillows rock, and this soundtrack is worth owning on its own outside of the world of anime fandom. Oh, and there's a show here as well. Trust me, there's a method to the madness- the show is not nearly as random as it seems at a glance. Start at the beginning, and stick with it to the end. There's so many things that come together in FLCL, that I think most people who wind up not liking the show just slapped a "too random" label on it and never gave it a real chance.
