I'm a sucker for shows that are upbeat while still managing to make things matter to a significant degree. In the first, more slice-of-lifey half the skillful use of the coastal setting and enthusiasm for fishing carries the show. More brilliantly, the second half successfully ratchets up the tension necessary to make the plot of the last few episodes as exciting as they are very very silly.

Tsuritama can be a little off putting at first, in a large part because the alien character who takes up a lot of the first few episodes by being completely obnoxious, but eventually the show finds a balance necessary to make that act charming instead of just irritating. In many ways it's all about the buildup to a final gag, but it's a really cool final gag, and the show is good natured enough to pull it off.
