Sum it up in a Sentence

A kid with a diary that tells the future and his stalker battle other magical diary owners to become a god.

Main Description

Yukiteru Amano is a withdrawn boy who spends all his time writing in his cell phone diary and talking with his imaginary friend Deus Ex Machina. One day Deus (who is apparently not so imaginary) gives Yukiteru a "Future Diary" that predicts the future. With this diary comes entrance in a survival game, in which Yukiteru must battle 11 other diary holders. Whoever is the sole survivor becomes the new Deus. Yukiteru is helped along (okay, usually gets his ass saved) by Yuno, a fellow diary holder who is obsessively in love with Yukiteru and just a little bit insane.

Mirai Nikki is a manga series that gets better as it goes. At the beginning the plot is fairly rough and the characters fairly generic, but as more diary holders are introduced and the characters of Yukiteru and Yuno are developed more it becomes very enjoyable. (I'd actually say that Yuno is one of the best-written recent anime or manga characters, developing from a one-note stereotype into an interesting and even believable character). Lots of scheming and plotting goes down, and the author doesn't pull any punches. The art is fairly standard manga fare, not really remarkable. On the whole a pretty good series.
