Personal Opinions

Scruffy the janitor

As many cliches that this show has, it's one of the first animes I saw on Toonami when I was a kid. I still think it's funny even if it did set the trend for some of the not so good things still around in anime.

It's an acceptable series for American preteens watching Cartoon Network, but otherwise it's a poorly written series with no redeeming factors.

This is one of the first anime shows that was on TV back when anime was slowly becoming more mainstream. It might have been decent quality then but, though I haven't re-watched any of it recently, I doubt it holds up well to the test of time. Even so, I have fond memories. There's a little more going on besides the whole "harem" aspect but unless you can see it all at once it gets bogged down by the love triangles. There's also a significant difference between the story-lines in the OAV and Tenchi Universe (the TV show.)

I initially watched Tenchi in Love (the first movie), without seeing anything else first. Though I was confused about the relationships between everyone (I assumed Ryoko was Sasami's sister, because they didn't specify Ayeka and the other two had similar hair colors; I also had no idea it was a harem anime and thought that Tenchi was just a super awesome best friend), I still enjoyed it immensely. The story has the group going back in time to save Tenchi's mother from a time-altering villain (she turns into a bad-ass at the end, even at the cost of her own life.) The love in the title is actually referencing how Tenchi's mother died when he was young (the villain was trying to kill her before Tenchi was born), so he didn't get to know her very well, and the story itself focuses on how Tenchi's mother and father get together. It's actually very touching.

Outside of the first movie though, I'm not sure I could recommend it that strongly. I may have just not watched enough of the series or first OAV but I found them largely forgettable. The characters have promise but having them all in love with Tenchi kind of drags it down, even though that's kind of part of the joke (that he's supposedly some Joe Schmo... except he's actually half-alien from Ayeka and Sasami's royal family, so it just gets wonky.) I suppose I'd have to watch it again to give a more definite review but I certainly wouldn't blame anyone for passing on the simple grounds that even the newest Tenchi sequel/spin-off is 6 years old.
