Sum it up in a Sentence
Girl magicked away to a fantasy world full of pyromaniacs and giant robots.
Main Description
Hitomi Kanzaki was a typical high school girl who liked track & field, reading tarot cards, and her high school senior Amano. But her destiny was not to be just with this ordinary life, and one night she encountered a strange man clad in armor fighting a dragon as if out of a fantasy book.
Transported to the world of Gaea, where the Earth hangs in the sky like a moon, Hitomi is caught up in a bloody war between the nations of Gaea and the Zaibach empire. Van Fanel, whom had become the king of Fanelia by slaying the dragon earlier, joins Hitomi along with other allies to find a way to stop Zaibach's machinations which are out to alter fate itself.

Personal Opinions

This is a show that mixes Shonen and Shojo material and does it well. You have giant mechs and sword fights for the shonen crowd and strong female characters and love triangles for the shojo crowd. I have found this to be a great show to watch with your signifficant other, epically if there anime interest differer than yours. The animation is a little dated, but its easy to get into and doesn't have a lot of Japanese culture that could confuse a viewer. I recommend this series for someone who is new to anime or wants something different in there usual shonen or shojo anime.

A highly successful genre bender, you could fill a spreadsheet with Escaflowne's influences. It boasts consistently high production values, great animation for a 90's tv anime, and Yoko Kanno delivers the best original soundtrack in all anime. Generally good mystical fantasy mecha shoujo shounen action romance, although Vaan grates as a character for a good half of the series and the ending is rushed but satisfying enough. There's also a movie which tells a completely different story, isn't bad at all, and would have had a much more postive reception had it not attempted to recycle the existing characters.
