Yuji Sekai was an ordinary student, or so he thought. One day while leaving a CD store, time freezes entirely, and he notices blue flames within the people around him. Suddenly, a monster appears and begins devouring these flames, and attempts to attack Yuji, only to be interrupted by a short red haired girl with a katana, who promptly destroys the beast. She tells Yuji that he is not a human, but rather a torch, a temporary replacement for humans who have had their flames devoured. Over time, torches will disappear, and their existence will not be remembered by anyone who was previously involved with them. She continues to tell Yuji that she is a Flame Haze, a destroyer of the Denizens of the Crimson Realm, those that devour the flames. Finding that the girl has no name, Yuji names her after her blade, Shana, and begins helping her battle the Denizens and their slaves.

Perfectly acceptable middle of the road anime.  Entertaining but not really engaging.  Oh, and the villains are cool.

While I do believe the ADTRW consensus on this show was favorable, I found Shana to be pretty dull. I know it's real popular, it's got a movie and a even a second season starting in about a month, but I see it as just another trite children's fantasy tale with annoying characters. The male lead is about as useful and emotionally secure as Piro from Megatokyo. I kept waiting for him to grow a pair but he never did. I also don't like the elementary school romance or anyone involved in said romance. The animation and art direction are pretty nice I guess, but the huge eyes that take up most of the face aren't really my thing.

And yet I'm pretty sure I'll still be watching the movie and the next season. It takes a load of crap before I'll drop a series. Maybe Shakugan no Shana doesn't entirely suck.

It's another Dengeki Bunko magical girlfriend adaption. If you have any previous experience, you know what to expect. I couldn't bring myself to drop the series, as I did want to complete the first season before reviewing. It's pretty mediocre. I can't honestly recommend the series unless you have some sort of fetish for Kugimiya Rie yelling URASAI, or can tolerate the rather flimsy characters. I'll go ahead and concede that the animation and fights are pretty damned cool though, and while the plot has a few interesting ideas, it doesn't really pay up on them however.

Main Description

But how does Yuji continue to exist as a torch without burning out?

Food Court Druid

Perfectly acceptable middle of the road anime. Entertaining but not really engaging. Oh, and the villains are cool.

Zackarotto

Kessel

Drags on a fair bit, but it's not bad. Just be sure you like your fantasy series.

Shockingly, the male lead does grow a pair in the second season.

Dj Meow Mix

It's another Dengeki Bunko magical girlfriend adaption. If you have any previous experience, you know what to expect. I couldn't bring myself to drop the series, as I did want to complete the first season before reviewing. It's pretty mediocre. I can't honestly recommend the series unless you have some sort of fetish for Kugimiya Rie yelling URASAI, or can tolerate the rather flimsy characters. I'll go ahead and concede that the animation and fights are pretty damned cool though, and while the plot has a few interesting ideas, it doesn't really pay up on them however.
