There aren't many anime shows that try for realistic representation of space ships, colonies, etc. Among those few, Planetes executes the realism the best, but it still isn't the main reason for watching the show. Character development and story is excellent. It manages to work across most of the cast and make you actually care about them. The main theme of personal motivation is explored very well. It knows when to use comedy and when to use drama. Excellent show.

Everyone talks up the space realism in this show so much, I was expecting to tune in to a show primarily about space realism. I was massively disappointed in this regard. Do not watch this show if you're primarily looking for space porn. Do watch this show if you want to see a fresh out of highschool teen do some growing up as she lives life in her new job (and that new job just so happens to be in space).

Planetes paints the hypothetical future setting of increasing space development, but one that could be seen as potentially within reach in reality. It balances the fantastical aspects of traveling into the unknown with a grounding human presence through well fleshed out characters and the lives they lead. This show is not about space as much it is about the people in space and it what it means to them, from individual ambition to the ethical implications of a new frontier. It's a smart and often funny show, with a solid soundtrack to boot, and absolutely worth checking out.

The day-to-day lives of space janitors against a believable hard sci-fi backdrop; the social and political implications of space travel as a part of daily life.

Main Description

In the year 2075, mankind has reached a point where journeying between Earth, the moon and the space stations is part of daily life. However, the progression of technology in space has also resulted in the problem of the space debris, which can cause excessive and even catastrophic damage to spacecrafts and equipment. This is the story of Technora's Debris Collecting section, its EVA worker, Hachirota "Hachimaki" Hoshino, and the newcomer to the group, Ai Tanabe.

Personal Opinions

araeris

There aren't many anime shows that try for realistic representation of space ships, colonies, etc. Among those few, Planetes executes the realism the best, but it still isn't the main reason for watching the show. Character development and story is excellent. It manages to work across most of the cast and make you actually care about them. The main theme of personal motivation is explored very well. It knows when to use comedy and when to use drama. Excellent show.

TannhauserGate

Everyone talks up the space realism in this show so much, I was expecting to tune in to a show primarily about space realism. I was massively disappointed in this regard. Do not watch this show if you're primarily looking for space porn. Do watch this show if you want to see a fresh out of highschool teen do some growing up as she lives life in her new job (and that new job just so happens to be in space).

Mongoloid

Planetes paints the hypothetical future setting of increasing space development, but one that could be seen as potentially within reach in reality. It balances the fantastical aspects of traveling into the unknown with a grounding human presence through well fleshed out characters and the lives they lead. This show is not about space as much it is about the people in space and it what it means to them, from individual ambition to the ethical implications of a new frontier. It's a smart and often funny show, with a solid soundtrack to boot, and absolutely worth checking out.
