Main Description
Vinland Saga is a historical manga mostly set in England during the early 11th century, during the time period when King Cnut the Great rose to power. The manga focuses on the story of Thorfinn, a historical explorer, as he grows from a hot-headed youth hell-bent on revenge into a calmer, more mature man. Thorfinn joins up with a group of vikings in order to take revenge on their leader for murdering his father, and eventually becomes wrapped up in King Sweyn's campaign to conquer England. Along the way, the author gets in a lot of detailed action scenes, a rather intricate plot, and manages to include some nice chapters focusing on the historical aspects of the manga.

Vinland Saga is one of the best manga currently running, with visceral action scenes, fun and compelling characters, good art, and an interesting story. My only complaint is that chapters take forever to come out (being a monthly manga) and are often a little on the short side. It looks like the really long arc focusing on Thorfinn hanging around with the Viking mercenaries is just the first arc of what will be a much longer manga, so it will be interesting to see where Yukimura goes from here.
