Description

Devilman is the story of Akira Fudo, a shy and modest high school boy who is one day approached by his best friend, Ryo Asuka, with the news that demons are coming to destroy humanity. Ryo plans to trick a demon into possessing Akira. As Akira is "pure of heart", this will allow Akira to remain in control with the benefit of gaining a demon's powers, allowing Akira to transform into a demon while retaining a human's heart and soul.

Devilman is amazing. The original manga is Go Nagai's finest work, with excellent action and storytelling both present. The atmosphere is suitably creepy, the monster designs are fantastic, and the direction of the plot in the final two volumes creates one of the best endings in manga history. It's only five volumes long, so you don't have to worry about making a large time investment in order to read this.

The OVAs released in 1987 and 1990 are fine adaptations of the first two volumes of the manga, and the fight against Sirene the Demonbird is one of the best fight scenes in anime. It's a real shame that all five volumes were not adapted. The Amon: Apocalypse of Devilman OVA is an alternate version of the last volume of the manga. It has some good scenes, but it's extremely violent even for Devilman.
