A hard-working yet unfortunate young man ends up in the employ of a wealthy and spoiled young girl after a rather great misunderstanding; various parodies ensue.
Main Description
Hayate Ayasaki is the honest son of two extremely irresponsible people, and he works hard every day just to support them. One day he comes home to find a note from his parents, explaining that this year, rather than a traditional Christmas present, they decided to sell his organs to the mob and take a globe-spanning trip to find themselves. The mob quickly appears to collect, but Hayate escapes.
Dejected, Hayate decides that honest people simply don't succeed in this cruel world, and he decides to kidnap a wealthy looking young girl named Nagi Sanzen'in. But Hayate is too honest to be a thug, so rather than properly kidnap her, he asks if she'll "come away" with him. She interprets this as an admission of love, and immediately falls for him.
Soon Hayate is rescuing her from actual kidnappers, and Nagi reveals herself to be fabulously wealthy, being the sole heir to an immense family fortune. Over the protests of her staff, Nagi hires Hayate as her personal butler and bodyguard. Little does Hayate suspect that being saved from the mafia has only flung him into a far more dangerous and bizarre world...

I like Hayate. It's not the most amazing series ever, but it's a pretty good little gag anime. The plots zip by quickly, and manage to avoid becoming overly stale or clichéd. If the early "stand alone" gag episodes don't do it for you, you may want to check out the series later on, when it goes into a full arc of Utena/dueling anime parodies.
I also think it's one of the fairly rare cases where the anime is much better than the manga. There's supposed to be a movie coming out soon, as well. I'd easily recommend this series to anyone looking for some light comedy fluff.
