Main Description
Sawako Kuronuma begins her high school years by meeting Shota Kazehaya, a popular and friendly boy in her class who fearlessly talks to Sawako, unlike most of her classmates past and present. Vowing to get to know him, Sawako has to become more open by overcoming her own fears in talking to others and clearing up misunderstandings people have of her. Her world eventually expands and the relationships she makes are put to the test as feelings develop and rumors fly while Sawako experiences things for the first time in her life.

The main character of the series, Sawako is a shy and misunderstood girl for most of her life because of her resemblance to the character 'Sadako' from The Ring horror series in both looks and in name (and sometimes her behavior). In reality, she is caring, honest, and simply wants to make friends with her classmates.
Shota Kazehaya
Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa
Kazehaya is a good-natured, inclusive, and charismatic student that seems to draw his classmates to him. Coupled with his looks, he is also the most sought-after among the girls in the school. He plays baseball and often rallies his class together.
Ayane Yano
Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro
Chizuru's best friend, Ayane is sharp, witty, and one of the more mature characters in the series. She is quick to pick up on hints and clues in a given situation and will scheme to protect or set up situations in favor of those she cares about.
Chizuru Yoshida
Voiced by: Yuko Sanpei
A tomboy at heart, Chizuru is Ayane's athletic best friend. She is quick-tempered, loud, and somewhat dense. However, she shows much love for her friends and is prone to showing her emotions on her sleeve by openly crying or other public displays of affection.
Ryu Sanada
Voiced by: Yuichi Nakamura
A man of few words, Ryu speaks infrequently but is friendly and patient nonetheless. He is Chizuru's childhood friend and former baseball teammates with Kazehaya.

I just want to point out first that there is a manga to the series and that I never read it before watching the series (nor have I read it as of this writing) so I don't know how loyal to the original iteration it is or if it's better or worse.
Kimi ni Todoke is a nice, sweet series that was done in good quality in terms of animation and direction (Production I.G always does good quality). I enjoyed watching it on the whole, but I have to say the progression and development slowed exponentially throughout the season. I'm usually appreciative when a series doesn't blaze through a whole year's worth of time in less than 10 episodes, but there was a lot of time spent where the characters are just shuffling their feet and I roll my eyes at how Japanese culture is portrayed once again as being the opposite of forward and finding a kiss in a romantic situation is like winning the lotto.
Besides the misgivings I have of serious situations in this series, I love the humor because it reminds me of Lovely Complex but it's not so over-the-top like Lovely Complex because Lovely Complex had the whole Kansai-ben comedy duo thing going on. The expressions and silly faces are also enjoyable because they don't get stereotypically animu very often and shows variety. If you know what you're getting into and just want to watch something unrealistic, sweet, and light (although designed to be a tearjerker at times), it can be enjoyed. Disclaimer: I haven't read the manga.

Kimi ni Todoke is an absolutely lovely anime and one of the best I've seen. The character design is great and, at least compared to the majority of other shows, kinda realistic. It's impossible to hate anyone (except for maybe one group of girls), no matter how stupid they can be sometimes. The art is pretty good and flawless and the countless faces Sawako makes are fantastic.
You should keep in mind though that this is a very, very slow show with only little progress in each episode with many flashbacks thrown in and scenes that last longer than you'd expect them to do. But for me this is hardly a flaw, if at all, since I prefer slow shows anyway. Also, this show is girly as FUCK, so if you're some manchild looking for plastic robots fighting little ninja children, you might want to skip this and just keep watching your 4kids shows. This one is aaaall about the bubbles.
