I think the description of this as a "shounen magical girl show" is pretty apt. This is a magical girl show with lasers. LASERS. (And some bad-ass magical wands too.) The plot of the first series is a little predictable, but the battles more than make up for it (7.7/10). The sequel, A's, seems to be the pinnacle of the series, although I can't rate it fully yet. Most people will tell you to stay away from StrikerS (as far as I can tell). In summary, yes, Nanoha is a magical girl show, but if liking Nanoha is wrong, I'm not sure I WANT to be right. (tl;dr: See above image.)

A shounen show that happens to have magical girls, or a magical girl show with higher power levels? You decide. Also worth noting is that the first season was directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, who directed things like Bakemonogatari, and it has hints of the same art style.

The first series is pretty good. Fate steals the show, of course, but Nanoha finding her way is interesting. Definitely a good mixture of shounen and shoujo elements. It reminds me of Cardcaptor Sakura a little bit, though there's no romance in sight.

The second series is the best, hands down. Fate returns as another protagonist, the new villains are beyond sympathetic, and the plot resolution is very satisfying. The only drawback is the downplaying of a certain character from the first series, IMHO, but otherwise I loved this to pieces. I can't imagine anyone disliking it, but it is a very emotion-driven plot.

The third series, StrikerS, is weird. It brings back everyone from the second series, which is wonderful, but it introduces several new characters who are a bit of a grab-bag and could put some people off. There are also some questionable plot points thrown in here and there. The villains aren't quite as exciting or in-depth as any from the previous plots, but given how there is an explosion of characters in this series, more than twice as many as the former two series combined, that's understandable. I enjoyed watching this one, but it has some definite flaws and I don't think it's for everyone.

Unfortunately, that's all I've watched, so I'm not sure how any of the other sequels/prequels are. But if you decide to only watch one series from the Nanoha line-up, all you really need to see is Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's.
