Sum it up in a Sentence:

A rural Japanese town is invaded by vampires and the town is slowly dying off with no one knowing the true cause.

Main Description

The story takes place in a particularly hot summer in the nineties, in a small quiet village called Sotoba. A series of mysterious deaths begin to spread in the village, at the same time when a strange family moves into the long abandoned Kanemasa mansion. Toshio Ozaki, dean of the only hospital in Sotoba, initially suspects an epidemic. But as investigations continue and the deaths begin to pile up, he becomes convinced that they are the work of the undead plaguing the village. A young man named Natsuno Yuuki, who hates living in the village, begins to be pursued and surrounded by death.

Personal Opinions

IShallRiseAgain

This is a slow-paced show that builds up an atmosphere of hopelessness and despair as the town futilely fights against a threat it isn't even aware of, and some even refuse to exist. The show does suffer from having a lot of bad anime hair, but its easy to ignore. The pacing is also a little bit rushed near the end, but the show is well worth checking out.

Redcrimson

Shiki is probably one of the best vampire anime to date. Stylish and atmospheric, Shiki is reminiscent of old vampire lore. Long before they sparkled and teenage girls wanted to date them, vampires were enigmatic and deadly creatures of the night and Shiki does a great job of recapturing that essence. The vampires' assault on the town is unnerving if not genuinely frightening. The characters, human and vampire alike, are compelling and unique. The show does a very good job of portraying both sides of the conflict as sympathetic but misguided. The OPs for the show are catchy and visually stunning, easily among my favorites of the last few years. It's probably also worth noting that the dub for Shiki by Funimation is exceptionally high-quality. The adpapted script does a good job of retaining the very Japanese setting of Sotoba while still flowing naturally in English.
