Sum it up in a Sentence:

Captain Harlock and his crew of dwarves fight aliens intent on conquering Earth.

Main Description

In a world where humanity has become lazy and degenerate, Captain Harlock stands for strength of will and individuality. After a large black orb from space crashes into a city, Harlock forecasts the invasion of an alien race known as the Mazone. The government attempts to deny the Mazone's existence, and does nothing to fight back. It is up to Captain Harlock and his misfit crew to save Earth from both the Mazone and itself.

Movie: Harlock: Space Pirate

Earth is a quarantined ruin, and mankind has scattered through the stars. Captain Harlock is a pirate with a dark past, who is on a mad quest to restore Earth to its former glory by any means possible. However, the ruling faction is dead set on protecting what little remains of Earth and ending the threat Harlock represents. Something has to give, and it's probably not going to be the guy in a cursed spaceship.

Personal Opinions

Dj Meow Mix

A classic series. Harlock is an awesome romantic hero, and the side characters are well developed as well, hell, even the villains are given enough development to be sympathetic.

Donnerberg

The CGI movie revolves around Logan, the audience stand-in and newest member of Harlock's pirate crew. The titular captain himself is initially presented as a cross between Dracula and Long John Silver, and it's unclear if he's a rogueish anti-hero or straight up bad guy. Having no familiarity with the setting, I found the character drama confusing, but was thoroughly entertained by the spectacular action. Harlock's ship plows through space in a plum of smoke reminiscent of Firefly's dirty sci-fi and stops only to unleash laser barrages akin to a JJ Abrams flick. Here be good times.
