Main Description

Star Driver: Radiant Takuto is set on an island somewhere in the south of Japan named Southern Cross Island. Some mysterious ancient ruins were discovered beneath the island along with 22 giant, humanoid robots called "Cybodies."

One evening Tsunashi Takuto washes up on Southern Cross Island and is rescued by Agemaki Wako and her fiance Shindou Sugata. It turns out that Takuto missed the last ferry to the island that evening and decided to jump into ocean and swim there so that he wouldn't miss the first day of school, knowing full well that he probably would have died if Wako and Sugata hadn't stumbled upon him on the beach--that's just the kind of guy he is!

Presently, the Cybodies can only function in an alternate dimension called "Zero Time" and there's a secret organization working to make the Cybodies work in the real world, the Glittering Crux Brigade. Takuto's fighting to stop them and so on.

Star Driver is dumb fun at its finest. It meanders around a bit near the middle, some of the characters are very superfluous, there is never really any sense of true conflict, the villains are woefully incompetent, and Takuto will always pull some new ability out of his ass at the last moment to win the day. All of this can be easily ignored though, because the rest of the show is just so damn great. The main characters are really likable, the animation is superb, the mecha designs are gorgeous, and the powers that Takuto keeps revealing are usually either amazing to look at or outright hilarious. I stopped taking the show seriously the moment someone said "You're the Galactic Prettyboy?!" and I had a blast with it the whole way through.

Yes Star Driver is indeed dumb fun at its best. Turn off your brain and enjoy some fabulous action courtesy of the Ginga Bishounen, Galactic Prettyboy, and the pompous over the top Glitter Crux. Also it's also worth mentioning that the writer of this show also wrote Revolutionary Girl Utena.
