Main Description

A valiant King stalks the corridors of his darkened palace, wondering what to do. The dragons have flipped out, ill omens are everywhere, and the magic that people rely upon is dwindling while disease spreads. On top of all this, his son is missing. Suddenly, Prince Arren appears before his father, and in a touching reunion, stabs the shit out of him and steals his sword.

Running away from that bad scene, Arren encounters Sparrowhawk, the Archmage of the land. Sparrowhawk bails him out of trouble and takes him to a farm where a friend of his will look after Arren. Arren meets Therru, a strange young girl, but before Arren can learn much about her, the nefarious Lord Cob strikes out at them in an attempt to crush his old rival Sparrowhawk.

Personal Opinions

I'm not certain why, but people don't like this movie. Maybe they're fans of the books, upset at the differing artistic vision. Perhaps they don't have patience for magical theory and flowery fantasy world building. Regardless, I like this movie. It's got some decent action, the kind of beautiful animation you'd expect from a Studio Ghibli movie, and while the story's hardly revolutionary, it's solidly entertaining. It reminded me a great deal of Howl's Moving Castle, which is definitely not a bad thing. All and all, I think that if you enjoy high fantasy films or books, you should be able to enjoy this movie.

Unless I really am the only person on earth who thinks this movie's good, which I suppose is possible.
