Sum it up in a Sentence:
Victorian America is invaded by lunar colonists; a spy from the moon uses a mecha hidden in a statue to protect his new home.
Main Description
A young man born on the moon, Loran Cehack is sent by Queen Dianna Soriel to the Earth to see if it is ready for colonization by the Moonrace. During his stay on the planet, he grows attached to it and its denizens, thanks to his foster family, the Heims. When the Moonrace returns to the Earth to begin colonization with giant machines, Earthlings are sorely unprepared. During a coming of age ceremony, Loran comes across the ∀ Gundam, an ancient mustached machine of unprecedented power. Using this "White Devil", Loran begins his struggle to bring peace to both sides of the conflict.

Turn-A Gundam is the one Gundam series I'd give a 5/5 to without any reservations. It may be slow, but if you watch it instead as a serialised Miyazaki film about robots fighting a war which happens to have the odd familiar MS in it, it makes a lot more sense. I loved the mech designs, and the range of settings from an Aztec nation to a turn-of-the-century America through to a Rapture-like moon base.

I love pretty much every Gundam series in existence, and this is probably tied to be my favorite of them all. It's just that good. Tomino got somewhat happy somewhere down the line, perhaps explaining this series' less serious tone throughout much of it. It carries all of your standard Gundam themes, but plays them a bit differently than what one might expect of the series as a whole. The mecha designs are great, with the Turn A itself perhaps being the most memorable with its trademark mustache. With its great visual and musical work (the openings are really catchy, you're not likely to forget them), this is Gundam at its finest. Tied only by G Gundam in my opinion. 5/5.

This show kind of feels like a War of the Worlds, but instead of heartless alien invaders, you replace them with spacenoids who come loaded with preconceptions about the Earth. The reasons for the conflict become more and more apparent as the series progresses, but a lot of it can be boiled down in the first few episodes, and I really like that. There are historical causes for the state of affairs on Earth, but neither side can lay all the blame on the past and consider themselves innocent, not when taking their own actions into consideration.

It's probably Tomino's best written/ designed series. It's a fantastic series that Tomino really went above and beyond with. The animation looks great, the art design (featuring mechanical design by Syd Mead) is great, and the plot is well written. Combine that with music by Yoko Kanno and you get a fantastic final product.

I barely know anything about Gundam, I doubt I'll ever bother to learn too much about Gundam. That said; I absolutely loved this series. Kanno's music and the generally well done animation and direction, combined with some pretty great characterization make this a very memorable show for me. Two characters in particular took what I thought was going to be an annoying gimmick and turned it into a powerfully written, nuanced character arc for the both of them. Even if you know next to nothing about Gundam, or are generally sick of giant robots, this show is definitely worth watching.
