Sum it up in a Sentence:
Talking raccoons use their gigantic magical testicles to...Wait, where are you going?
Main Description
Tanuki are lazy, goofy talking animals, content to just hang out in the woods and occasionally forage for trash. One day, they learn that the humans are planning to build a large development in their serene mountains, and they must learn to hone their animal magic and drive off the humans.
What Was That About Balls Again?
Yeah...tanuki are a part of traditional Japanese folklore. And in folklore, they are endowed not only with magical powers, but also humongous balls. And they use those balls the beat up unsuspecting dudes. It's just one of many screwed up ancient myths centered on the fear of emasculation.
So next time you're playing Mario 3, just think of monstrous balls crushing men to death. You're welcome.

Personal Opinions

Pom Poko is a fairly odd movie. The pacing isn't quite tight enough for a straight-forward comedy, the tanukis are sort of portrayed as the bad guys despite the film's obvious environmentalist message, and there's a ton of morbid and even somewhat scary scenes for what would appear to be a light-hearted family film. Still, it's funny when it wants to be, wonderfully animated throughout, and despite some odd means of getting there, showcases Studio Ghibli's incredible imagination. While it's far from perfect, it's a movie well worth seeing.
Oh yes, and BALLS BALLS BALLS BALLS OF STEEEL.
P.S.- I spent far too long today looking at raccoon balls. I'm probably on some sort of watch-list now.
