Sum it up in a Sentence:

Goh and Anna Saruwatari deal with their strained marriage while the animators point and laugh at GaoGaiGar FINAL's pitiful attempt at putting boobs on giant robots.

Main Description

Five years ago, Goh Saruwatari became a hero when he stopped the invasion of the Mimetic Beasts, but the cost of victory - the death of his partner and lover, Mira - left him a broken man. Since then he's been off front-line service, playing second fiddle to the other pilots at Dannar Base... until he meets Anna Aoi, the daughter of his superior.

On the eve of their wedding, at the moment when he's about to say the fateful words "I do", the Mimetic Beasts return, and Goh finds himself thrust back into action in the Godannar. Anna, not content to sit back and do nothing, comes across the deactivated Neo Okusaer - Mira's robot, the partner to Godannar - and resolves to become a mecha pilot herself so she can fight alongside Goh rather than merely watching his back.

Personal Opinions

Crosscontaminant

I liked Godannar - the characters were endearing, the plot was reasonably engaging if occasionally formulaic (though with a couple of extremely effective shifts in direction). As a point of minor praise, it's definitely one to hold up if you want an example of how to do a recap episode and an epilogue effectively.

The Mimetic Beasts don't try to be thought-provoking or novel, but they're never the focus of the series' attention - rather, it wants you to enjoy the relationships between characters, particularly Goh and Anna. Different varieties of relationship are showcased, and they're all solid and thoroughly delightful to watch - particularly the Russians, since there's not many other instances of female-dominant pairs where it's clear both participants really do appreciate one another.

The weakest pair is the brother and sister - I didn't mind them so much other than feeling they didn't get a great deal of characterisation beyond "so British it hurts", but others have read incestual tones into them which would certainly detract from enjoying the series. The main general caution I'd give is that if boobs'n'butts fanservice puts you off, Godannar may not be up your street - it's nowhere near as blatant as other series, but there isn't really any attempt to avoid it, and a couple of character and robot designs outright revel in it.
