Sum it up in a Sentence:

A crazy environmentalist wizard lives in the sea, hating humans, until his magical fish daughter (Ponyo) meets a little boy and becomes enamored with his world. Magic and lessons about kindness and love and such ensue.

Main Description

Ponyo (well her real name is Brunhilde but that's not as whimsical and no-one but her dad calls her that anyway) is a magical talking fish with the face of a little girl. Her father, Fujimoto, is a cranky old wizard living in an underwater castle. He thinks humans suck because they defile the ocean, which is a particularly touchy subject for Fujimoto because Ponyo's mom is the ocean. Literally.

Ponyo decides she wants to check out these humans that her dad's always yelling about, so she swims up next to a quaint little seaside town. She gets herself trapped in garbage, but a little boy named Sōsuke rescues her. Sōsuke cuts himself in the process, and Ponyo heals it, getting a nice little taste of human blood to boot.

Fujimoto magics Ponyo back home, but finds her budding affection for Sōsuke and the human world (also that human blood thing earlier) is making her too stubborn and powerful to keep grounded, so he runs off to get her mom. Ponyo enlists her sisters to help her escape and return to Sōsuke as a little girl. Unfortunately, her escape messes with the very sensitive magical equipment lying around her dad's castle, and she causes a massive storm to hit Sōsuke's town, endangering everyone.

Just finished watching the latest Hayao Miyazaki flick and I have to say it is pretty awesome. It is also very very very kid-friendly however, I didn't find it to be too kiddy to the point where I did not want to watch it anymore. If you enjoyed My Neighbor Totoro as a child or even as an adult you will definitely be grinning the entire time. If you have kids I cannot recommend this movie enough to them as it is pretty damn magical. The art and soundtrack are both superb and it was very refreshing to not see such blatant use of cgi in this. As a kid's movie this is definitely a must see, however if you are looking for something as breathtaking as Spirited Away you might be disappointed. Still worthy of a watch though.
