A slice of life about four high schoolers with a twist... one of them is a female otaku!
Main Description
Although not quite as varied as the larger cast of Azumanga Daioh, the four main characters are very entertaining and each has a very different personality. Most of the humor in the show comes from the off the wall conversations that take place among the set of friends and the multitude of anime, manga, and video game references that pop up throughout each episode. With the exceptions of a few jokes that make callbacks to previous events, there are are no plot lines that extend for multiple episodes.
Main Characters
| Konata spends most of her free time playing video games, reading manga, and watching anime (and then posting about it on 2channel). She is often seen playing an MMO, and sometimes joins up with her teacher to battle together online. Perhaps her strangest hobby is playing erotic dating games. In order to fund her expensive habits, she works after school at a cosplaying cafe. | |
| Kagami, despite being born only a few minutes before her fraternal twin sister Tsukasa, takes the role of the responsible older sibling. She studies a lot and does very well in school. Although she often gets annoyed and embarrassed by Konata's crazy remarks, the two can get along well and enjoy getting together for a few rounds of multiplayer videogames from time to time. | |
| Tsukasa is somewhat of a ditz. She doesn't do as well in school as Kagami, but she is a much better cook--something that Konata will often comment on. | |
| Miyuki is almost the complete opposite of Konata. She is a serious student and always polite. She is very intelligent, and the other girls often ask for her opinion because of her seemingly endless amount of knowledge. Because she is an attractive, naive, polite, clumsy, glasses-wearing girl, Konata always points out how Miyuki is like a living moe character. |
Lucky Channel
At the end of every episode, there is a segment called Lucky Channel. It features Akira (a child star) and Shiraishi (an extra who plays a classmate on the main segment of the show), and the two sometimes discuss the episode that just aired. Akira can be extremely energetic; however, she often gets jealous of the main characters and Shiraishi, which causes her to talk in a deep and depressing voice.
Miyakawa-ke no Kuufuku
Translated as "The Miyakawa Family's Hunger," is a spin-off series ONA of Lucky Star that aired in 2013 for 10 episodes that lasted around 3-5 minutes each. The series centers around the everyday life of younger sister Hikage and her irresponsible older sister Hinata, and focuses on Hikage's daily struggle against poverty caused by Hinata spending most of her income (earned by working at the manga shop Konata likes to frequent) on otaku merchandise.

Personal Opinions
Dan a man
Lucky Star is a really enjoyable show. The more anime you've watched, manga you've read, and games you've played, the more you will enjoy the series. But even if you don't catch all the obscure references that the show throws at you, there's still plenty here to find funny. And just a little warning: don't limit this show to a "one episode test." The premiere has a much more relaxed and laid back pace than the rest of the series. Many people who hated the first episode went on to fully enjoy the rest of the series.
Vargatron
I really don't have much to say about this anime. It panders to otaku, however there are a lot of particularly funny scenes, especially with the various franchise parodies. There is no real plot other than the random musings of a group of high school girls, but if you're watching this show for the plot, then you've missed the point entirely.
Light on substance, but a good watch if you're into comedy and are an otaku yourself.

Vaerai Archon
This is essentialy Seinfeld but about nerds. The episodes and humor do share alot of similarities in how they flow. There is alot of conversationl humor and definetly comic relief who plays off the straight man. If you don't like that type of humor you probably won't enjoy the show. This isn't exactly random humor like something out of Family Guy, it's very structured in how everything gets setup for the payoff. While there are direct parodies of genres in some episodes they are few and far between. Most of the anime references come in the form of the characters talking about it, not acting it out. The series itself is episodic in nature and while there is some minor character progression there really is no story arc for the entire series. I guess in the end the show is what it is, an overview of nerds and how they live and interact with others. Not very indepth but at brief times touching and true to life, you can see that they could have gone on indefinetly and be a Simpsons-esque quagmire. The ending was perfect however, no big reveal or dramatic reversal of fourtune, just calmly and quietly fade to white.
