Sum it up in a Sentence:
A young girl who's too busy reading to think about her future searches for the boy who's read all the same library books she has, convinced he must be her true love.
Main Description
Shizuku Tsukishima is a young girl who loves books, but doesn't care to apply herself to the ones she's supposed to be studying. One day, she notices that every single book she's taken out from the library was previously taken out by a boy named Seiji Amasawa. Shizuku just knows that she'll get along perfectly with this young man.
When she actually meets him, though, things are quite different than she imagined. Seiji gets on her nerves and irritates her for reasons she can't fully understand. In time, she comes to appreciate the good things about Seiji; in particular, she starts to admire his passion for the violin and his unwavering commitment to his craft. She wonders how she can return his affection without having a future or a passion of her own. Eventually she decides to try being a writer, in the hopes that working on something difficult and prolonged like writing a book will bring them closer together.

This isn't anyone's favorite Ghibli movie; hell, hardly anyone I know's even bothered to watch it. And while I think it moves a bit slow, particularly in the last 40 minutes or so, there's a lot to like here. It's a fairly mundane story about a young girl discovering herself as well as her first love, and while there's not much else going on, the honest and charming way it's presented is enough. It's a very sweet and sentimental little film that does a good job capturing the beauty in everyday life, and very few other films do it quite as well. Go in with the proper attitude (i.e. don't expect another The Cat Returns, even though the two movies are technically related) and it'll be well worth it.
